The Palms Springs Unified School District and the Palm Springs Boys & Girls Club collaborated with Social Mosaics to create a boy and a girl that were installed on the Club’s exterior corridor — the walkway of each student and parent into the Teen Facility at the Club. Each piece is approximately 6'x4' and is made with stained glass, viterous glass, mirror and Italian smalti. The students ranged from middle school to high school and each brought a specific idea of color and placement to the project. The hair on the boy was fashioned after our high school male student who worked diligently with the girls who harassed him about his perfectly coiffured hair.

The pieces were unveiled in a formal ceremony with members from the District’s Board and the Club’s President in attendance. The local newspaper, The Desert Sun, and local TV station, KESQ, were in attendance with both entities giving this project its just acknowledgment in the local news.

The project took 3 months to complete. The students worked three hours a day twice a week. The Torch Club Executive Director also worked with the students along with a Social Mosaic volunteer, Arlene Delaney.
