Shiny Apple Award

The Palms Springs Unified School District would like to extend its appreciation to Social Mosaics for bringing art into the lives of children.

In the fall of 2007, Nedra Young, a local tile mosaic artist, started working with students of Raymond Cree Middle School. She volunteered her time teaching three classes, three days per week. During that time, Nedra donated all the necessary supplies and materials. The students made three pieces of abstract mosaic furniture, which were sold at a silent auction with all proceeds benefiting the mosaic program.

Social Mosaics, an non-profit organization, was established in January 2008. Jennifer Johnson, a well known and respected tile mosaics artist, joined Nedra in the classroom. Together, they taught two classes. The students were able to show and sell their work at the All District Art Show and the Raymond Cree Talent Show. Again, the proceeds benefited the mosaic program. They also completed the school’s mascot, a matador which is now on display at the school.

Jennifer and Nedra have generously donated their time and talent. They love the art form and want to give students the opportunity to express themselves through creativity. They have seen how students who were previously disruptive, sit and devote many hours of quiet study and effort to create beautiful pieces of tile mosaic art. The students' art becomes the source of a great deal of pride and self esteem when completed.

Social Mosaics has shown that when the community gets involved, amazing and powerful experiences are possible for the District students. Their commitment allows the students to grow into creative and expressive leaders of tomorrow.

On behalf of the students and staff of the Palm Springs Unified School District, members of the Governing Board and administration, it is a pleasure to present you with the District’s Shiny Apple Award. You have truly made a difference!
