From her first effort, a mosaic floor she created in a San Francisco flat
in the mid-1970s, Jennifer has been actively involved in the current revival
of this art form. Her early career in the 1960s and 1970s as a social work
caseworker provided her with a deep exposure to problems of poverty, social
injustice and discrimination. At a time of great upheaval in the country,
she developed a belief in the power of art to bring people together and the
necessity of service to others. Following a successful career as an artist
while her children were being raised, she always knew that her path would
return to social service. Last year this dream came to fruition with the
formation of Social Mosaics, a company with the specific goal of bringing
communities together through art. Throughout her career she has always done
projects in the community with children, at-risk youth and seniors. As this
new venture unfolds the goal is to devote the majority of her time and talent
to service to others through art.
With old friend and great mosaic colleague, Nedra Young, she looks forward
to 2008 as the beginning of a new era in her life and an exciting time of
helping others.
Jennifer has been married for 39 years to Hunter L. Johnson, president of
a not-for-profit company providing thousands of units of affordable housing
throughout California. She has three grown children and has resided in Palm
Springs, CA for over 20 years.
